Short answer: book character cafes from the official cafe or reservation page, not from old listicles or resale posts. Character cafes are not all booked the same way. The important question is not “Is this cafe popular?” but “What entry system does this specific cafe use for my date?” Start there, then plan the rest of the day.
Advance reservation
You choose a date, time, and party size on an official reservation page. This is common for famous permanent character cafes.
Lottery reservation
You apply during a set period and wait for a result. This can appear for limited collaboration cafes with high demand.
Vacant-seat reservation
Remaining seats open after lottery or normal booking. This is useful, but it is not a reliable replacement for planning early.
Free entry or walk-in
No advance reservation may be needed, but entry tickets, queues, or changed entry rules can still happen when demand is high.
Event ticket first
At exhibitions or conventions, the event admission ticket may matter before the food booth or cafe queue.
Goods-only visit
Some stores allow goods shopping without a cafe seat, while others limit goods access to cafe users. Confirm before going.

- Official page. Find the cafe’s official site, official franchise page, or official event page. Avoid starting from screenshots or old ranking posts.
- Travel date and flexible backup. Have your first-choice date plus one backup date or time block.

When to check reservations
Check as soon as your travel dates are realistic, then check again when the cafe posts a new reservation notice. Other cafes may use event pages, lottery periods, or vacant-seat releases.
For limited collaboration cafes, the most important date may be the lottery application period, not the cafe opening day. Walk-ins: possible does not mean reliable
Some official FAQs mention walk-ins or last-minute cancellation seats, but that should be treated as a bonus, not the plan. If the cafe is your reason for crossing town, a walk-in attempt should have a nearby backup activity and meal. This is especially true on weekends, school holidays, collaboration openings, and limited goods release days.
How to build a backup plan
A good backup plan should be close enough that you still enjoy the day. If the cafe is in Tokyo Station, use station restaurants, character shops, department-store food floors, or Nihombashi as backup. If the cafe is near Akihabara or Ikebukuro, plan a nearby anime store route plus a normal meal. If the cafe is in Osaka, keep a food hall, shopping area, or regular restaurant close to the route.
