Name The Port Before Anyone Drives

Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page says Oshima uses Motomachi Port and Okada Port and that arrival and departure ports may differ. Its FAQ says arrival ports can be checked while aboard ship. Izu Oshima Navi also explains that the two ports are used depending on same-day waves and wind.

If a taxi company, lodging staff member, or private pickup contact is coming for you, name Motomachi Port or Okada Port before they move. A vague “ferry port” message can waste time and send someone to the wrong place.

Wait Outside The Moving Path

Oshima Tourism Association notes that taxis do not cruise, nighttime service is limited, and most taxis wait at ports or the airport, with phone inquiry recommended. That makes waiting posture important: be visible enough to meet your ride, but not in the path of vehicles, buses, doors, staff work, or passengers still leaving the ship.

If you are not sure where to stand, ask where you can wait with a pet carrier and luggage. Move if staff, drivers, or other travelers need the space.

Keep The Carrier Closed

Tokai Kisen’s FAQ says pets must be inside an acceptable cage or carry-on with face and body parts not visible. The Japanese pet page says open bags cannot be accepted and pet carry-on may be refused during congestion.

Even after leaving the ship, keep the carrier closed, level, and close to you. Do not open the carrier beside cars, buses, or a busy doorway. If the pet needs attention, ask where you can move first.

Make Yourself Easy To Pick Up

A good pickup message is short: actual port, visible landmark if safe to mention, number of travelers, pet carrier, luggage amount, and whether you can move to meet the vehicle. Do not spread bags across the waiting area while you wait.

Keep the phone where you can answer quickly. If the driver or pickup contact asks you to move, confirm that the route is safe with the carrier and luggage before stepping into vehicle movement.

Keep Bus Fallback Alive

Tokai Kisen’s FAQ says Oshima has bus service, but frequency can be low and timetables should be checked beforehand. Oshima Bus’s FAQ says small pets may ride only if inside a cage, Suica and PASMO are not accepted, payment is cash or PayPay, and only 50 to 500 yen coins and 1,000 yen bills can be exchanged on the bus.

If taxi waiting becomes too long, your bus fallback should still be usable. Keep cash or PayPay ready, keep the carrier closed, and avoid walking away from route information until the next option is clear.

Use Weather As Part Of Etiquette

JMA provides English warnings and advisories, and its forecast information includes weather, winds, coastal ocean waves, temperatures, and precipitation probability. Rain, wind, heat, or rough conditions can make everyone crowd toward shelter, but that does not make a doorway or vehicle lane a good waiting place.

If weather makes waiting difficult with a pet, ask where waiting is appropriate. Staying compact and movable helps both you and the people trying to keep the port flow working.
