Oshima Ferry Pet Rebooked Departure Taxi-No-Show Backup Guide
Short answer: If a taxi or pickup does not appear after arriving on Oshima with a pet after a rebooked ferry departure, first verify the actual port, step clear of vehicles and passengers, make one useful retry call or message, then check lodging, bus, or waiting fallback while keeping the carrier closed, luggage compact, payment ready, and phone battery protected.
Last checked: August 25, 2026. Ferry operation status, port choice, debarkation handling, pet rules, baggage handling, payment, weather, warnings, sea conditions, bus operation, taxi availability, lodging responses, pickup timing, waiting areas, vehicle movement, and staff instructions can change. Always follow current Tokai Kisen, JMA, Oshima Tourism Association, Izu Oshima Navi, Oshima Bus, terminal, taxi-company, lodging, and local staff guidance.

First Verify The Port Name
Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page says Oshima uses Motomachi Port and Okada Port and that arrival and departure ports may differ. Its FAQ says arrival ports can be checked while aboard ship, and Izu Oshima Navi explains that the two ports are used depending on same-day waves and wind.
If a taxi or pickup does not appear, do not assume the driver is wrong first. Confirm whether you told them Motomachi Port or Okada Port. If your message said only “the ferry port,” send a clearer correction before asking anyone to search for you.
Step Clear Before Retrying
Oshima Tourism Association notes that taxis do not cruise, nighttime service is limited, and most taxis wait at ports or the airport, with phone inquiry recommended. A retry call is useful only if you can make it without blocking vehicle movement, bus movement, doors, staff work, or passengers still moving through the port.
Move to a compact waiting spot first. Keep luggage together, keep the pet carrier close, and be ready to move if staff, drivers, or other passengers need the space.
Make One Useful Retry Call
A useful retry call is short: actual port, your visible waiting point if safe to describe, number of travelers, pet in a closed carrier, luggage amount, and destination. Avoid repeating the whole disruption story while your phone battery is falling.
If the taxi company or pickup contact cannot come, ask one practical question: where should you wait next, or whether you should switch to another option. Do not keep calling the same number without new information.
Keep The Pet Plan Stable
Tokai Kisen’s FAQ says pets must be inside an acceptable cage or carry-on with face and body parts not visible. The Japanese pet page says open bags cannot be accepted and pet carry-on may be refused during congestion.
Waiting longer is not a reason to open the carrier in a busy port area. Keep it closed, level, and away from wheels, doors, and vehicle movement. If the pet needs attention, ask where you can move without blocking the flow.
Check Bus Fallback Without Guessing
Tokai Kisen’s FAQ says Oshima has bus service, but frequency can be low and timetables should be checked beforehand. Oshima Bus’s FAQ says small pets may ride only if inside a cage, Suica and PASMO are not accepted, payment is cash or PayPay, and only 50 to 500 yen coins and 1,000 yen bills can be exchanged on the bus.
If taxi or pickup is failing, bus fallback needs the actual port, a usable route direction, a closed carrier, and payment that works. Do not walk away from the port area until you know which direction you are trying to go.
Use Weather To Choose The Next Wait
JMA provides English warnings and advisories, and its forecast information includes weather, winds, coastal ocean waves, temperatures, and precipitation probability. Weather may make waiting outside harder, but it does not create permission to block a doorway, vehicle path, or staff area.
If rain, wind, heat, or rough conditions are affecting your pet or luggage, ask where waiting is appropriate. Then choose the fallback that saves phone battery and keeps you movable.
Taxi-No-Show Backup Checklist
- Confirm whether you are at Motomachi Port or Okada Port.
- Move clear of vehicles, buses, doors, passengers, and staff work.
- Keep the pet carrier closed, level, and close to you.
- Make one clear retry call or message with port name, pet carrier, luggage, and destination.
- If no ride is available, ask where to wait or which fallback is realistic.
- Check bus fallback only with route direction, carrier rule, cash or PayPay, and phone battery ready.
- Stay compact so you can move when the backup option becomes clear.
