Short answer: If taxi or pickup backup fails after arriving on Oshima with a pet after a rebooked ferry departure, do not switch to the bus just because a bus stop exists. Start With The Actual Port

Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page says Oshima uses Motomachi Port and Okada Port, and that arrival and departure ports may differ. Its FAQ says arrival ports can be checked while aboard ship. Izu Oshima Navi also explains that the two main ports are used depending on same-day waves and wind.

This matters because a bus fallback is not simply “take the next bus.” Route direction, pickup points, lodging distance, and waiting position depend on whether you are actually at Motomachi or Okada. Before opening a map app, say the port name out loud and make sure your lodging, taxi contact, or travel partner is using the same name.

Use A Three-Gate Decision

The bus becomes realistic only after three gates are clear. First, you know where you are and where you need to go. Second, the pet can stay inside a closed carrier while you board, ride, and move luggage. Third, you have payment and enough battery to recover if the bus option fails.

If one gate is missing, stay in a compact waiting place and ask for help before moving. Leaving the port area with unclear direction, weak battery, or too much luggage can make the next step harder.

Check The Pet Rule Before The Timetable

Tokai Kisen’s FAQ says pets must be inside an acceptable cage or carry-on with no face or body parts visible, and the Japanese pet page says open bags cannot be accepted. Oshima Bus’s FAQ says small pets may ride only if inside a cage.

That means the carrier is not a detail at the end of the plan. If the carrier cannot stay closed and manageable on the bus, bus fallback may not be the right recovery option. Keep the carrier level, close to you, and away from wheels, doors, and passenger flow while you decide.

Confirm Payment Before You Walk Away

Oshima Bus’s FAQ says Suica and PASMO are not accepted, and route-bus payment is cash or PayPay. It also says on-bus exchange is limited to 50 to 500 yen coins and 1,000 yen bills.

Before leaving a staffed or sheltered waiting point, check whether you have cash that can actually work, PayPay if you plan to use it, and enough phone battery to keep payment, calls, and maps available. A bus fallback that depends on a dying phone is fragile.

Do Not Guess The Route Direction

Tokai Kisen’s FAQ notes that Oshima has bus service, but frequency may be low and timetables should be checked beforehand. Oshima Tourism Association says taxis do not cruise, nighttime service is limited, and phone inquiry is recommended. These two facts together make guessing risky: if the bus is wrong, another taxi recovery may also be difficult.

Use official timetable and route information for the current port. If your lodging is expecting you, send one short message before boarding: actual port, bus direction you are considering, pet in carrier, luggage amount, and battery level.

Use Weather As A Practical Filter

JMA provides English warnings and advisories, and its forecast information includes weather, winds, coastal ocean waves, temperatures, and precipitation probability. Weather does not decide the route by itself, but it changes whether you should wait outside, move slowly with luggage, or ask for a safer waiting place first.

If rain, wind, heat, or rough conditions make the carrier or luggage hard to manage, do not rush to the bus stop because you feel embarrassed. Ask where to wait, keep the carrier closed, and choose the fallback that keeps you movable.

Check the official route and timetable for that actual port.
Confirm the destination or lodging direction before leaving the waiting area.
