Think Of Taxi Backup As A Phone Plan

Oshima Tourism Association says there are no cruising taxis on Izu Oshima, night service is very limited, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers who want to use taxis should inquire by phone. That is the most important difference from many city trips: taxi backup is not just “stand outside and wait.”

For a pet traveler, the phone call is the plan. Say that you have a pet, describe the carrier, state the number of passengers, explain luggage size, give your pickup point, and name the destination port. If any part is uncertain, the taxi is not yet a confirmed backup.

Confirm The Ferry Port Before Calling Too Late

Do not wait until every traveler is reacting to the same port decision. Once the port is clear enough to act, call early. If the status is still unsettled, ask lodging or a waiting base what time they usually recheck before calling a taxi, then refresh Tokai Kisen operation status again.

Keep The Pet Rule Separate From The Taxi Question

Tokai Kisen’s pet guidance says pets must be in a cage or basket no more than 45cm per side, with the pet’s face and body kept inside. Its English FAQ says pets should be in a cage or carry-on with sides no longer than 45 cm and placed in a designated area as instructed by crew.

This ferry rule does not automatically answer the taxi question. A taxi company may have its own current answer for pets, carriers, seat protection, luggage, and passenger count. Ask directly before you rely on the ride.

Protect The Ferry Counter Buffer

Tokai Kisen’s English FAQ recommends arriving about one hour before large passenger ships and about 30 minutes before high-speed jet ferries. With a pet, that buffer should also cover pet-ticket handling, carrier confirmation, counter guidance, and boarding movement.

When you call a taxi, state the ferry departure time and the time you want to be at the port. If the taxi cannot get you there with enough buffer, choose another plan. A ride that arrives just before departure is not a good pet-travel backup.

Ask About Luggage And Pickup Shape

Pet travel usually means less flexibility than solo travel. The carrier may occupy a hand, lap, or luggage space, and wet weather can make waiting outdoors uncomfortable. When calling, describe the carrier as well as bags, strollers, sports gear, or large suitcases.

Also give a pickup point that a driver can understand: lodging name, port terminal, airport, bus stop, or a nearby landmark. If you are outside a busy port after a ferry notice changes, a precise meeting place matters more than a general area name.

Keep Oshima Bus As A Conditional Fallback

Oshima Bus can be useful, but it is not a replacement for taxi confirmation unless the current pet handling is confirmed. Oshima Tourism Association says bus details should be checked with Oshima Bus, and bus timetables should be checked close to travel.

Prepare payment if bus fallback becomes possible. Oshima Bus’s FAQ says Suica, PASMO, and other transportation IC cards are not accepted, while cash or PayPay can be used. It also limits what change can be made, so small cash is useful even when PayPay is your main plan.
