Start With The Port, Not The Bus Stop

Izu Oshima uses Motomachi Port and Okada Port depending on same-day sea conditions, and the departure port may not be known until the day. Izu Oshima Navi also explains that the island’s two main ports are used according to wave and wind conditions, so the day’s departure port can affect bus timetable choice.

Before treating Oshima Bus as your fallback, refresh Tokai Kisen operation status and confirm the ferry port. A bus that reaches the wrong port is not a fallback; it is a delay with a pet carrier and luggage.

Know The Oshima Bus Pet Rule

Oshima Bus’s FAQ says pets may be brought only when they are small breeds and inside a cage. Keep that sentence narrow. It does not say that every pet, every carrier size, every crowded bus, or every luggage combination will be comfortable or practical.

Tokai Kisen’s ferry rule is separate: pets must be in a cage or basket no more than 45cm per side, with the pet’s face and body kept inside. If your pet and carrier cannot satisfy both the ferry side and the bus side, use another transfer plan before you reach the terminal.

Use The Latest Route-Bus Page

Oshima Bus publishes route-bus timetables, route maps, fare information, riding guidance, and carry-on luggage information. When checked, the route-bus timetable period shown was July 1, 2026 to September 30, 2026. Izu Oshima Navi tells travelers to check the Oshima Bus website for latest timetable details.

Use those pages close to travel instead of saving an old screenshot. Port choice, seasonal schedules, ship arrival time, and weather can all change the usefulness of a bus fallback.

Prepare Cash Or PayPay

Oshima Bus’s FAQ says Suica, PASMO, and other transportation IC cards are not accepted, while cash or PayPay can be used. It also says change on route buses is limited to 50 yen, 100 yen, and 500 yen coins and 1,000 yen notes.

For pet travel, payment friction matters. A bus fallback is weaker if you reach the door with a cage, luggage, and only a transportation IC card. Carry small cash even if PayPay is your main plan.

Do Not Spend The Ferry Buffer

Tokai Kisen’s English FAQ recommends arriving about one hour before large passenger ships and about 30 minutes before high-speed jet ferries. With a pet, that time must cover the ferry counter, pet-ticket handling, carrier confirmation, and boarding movement.

If the bus route saves money but consumes the ferry buffer, it is not the right fallback. Choose the route that leaves enough time for the pet procedure, especially when the port has changed or the weather is unsettled.

Use Early-Ship Buses Carefully

Oshima Bus’s FAQ says connection buses are available for large ships arriving early in the morning, but departure times are not fixed because ship arrival time can vary. It tells travelers to move to the bus stop promptly after disembarking.

That guidance is useful when arriving on the island, but it also shows why timing is fluid around ship operations. With a pet, do not assume a slow transfer from cabin, deck, luggage, or pet room will still leave comfortable bus time.

Keep Taxi Backup Honest

Oshima Tourism Association says taxis do not cruise, night service is very limited, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should inquire by phone. That makes taxi backup useful, but it should be arranged early and explained clearly.

If the bus does not fit the pet rule, luggage, payment, or ferry buffer, call before the bus option fails completely. State the pet, carrier, luggage, pickup point, destination port, and desired arrival time.

A Pet Bus Fallback Sequence

  1. Refresh Tokai Kisen operation status and confirm Motomachi Port or Okada Port.
  2. Check that the pet is a small breed inside a cage for Oshima Bus.
  3. Check that the ferry carrier still satisfies Tokai Kisen’s 45cm closed-carrier rule.

  5. Prepare cash or PayPay because Suica and PASMO are not accepted.
