Start With The Live Port Decision

Oshima Tourism Association explains that Izu Oshima uses Okada Port in the north and Motomachi Port in the central area depending on same-day sea conditions, and that the departure port may not be known until the day. That is the key fact for pet travelers: a transfer plan that worked at breakfast can be wrong by boarding time.

Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page is the live official source for service status, port decisions, conditional operation, cancellation, and warnings. The page asks users to refresh before checking. Before you move a pet carrier, luggage, children, or a rental-car return plan toward either port, check that official status and read the port name carefully.

Do Not Open The Carrier During The Reset

A port change can tempt travelers to reorganize everything on a bench or outside a terminal. With a pet, avoid making the carrier the flexible part of the plan. Tokai Kisen’s pet guidance says pets must be in a cage or basket no more than 45cm per side, with the pet’s face and body kept inside. Its English FAQ gives the same basic rule for a cage or carry-on with sides no longer than 45 cm and placement in a designated area as instructed by crew.

Keep the pet contained while you solve the land-side route. If the carrier is opened, too large, or difficult to handle with luggage, you can create a second problem before you even reach the ferry counter.

Tokai Kisen asks travelers to tell the customer center the pet type, number of pets and people, and size at reservation time. For internet reservations, it asks travelers to email reservation number, name, pet type, number of pets and people, and size.

When the port changes, keep that confirmation close to your passenger-ticket details. The goal is to arrive with the ferry and pet facts already settled, so the only remaining question is the land-side transfer from your current position to the correct port.

Choose Bus Only With Current Confirmation

Oshima Tourism Association says Oshima has route buses and sightseeing buses, and Izu Oshima Navi points travelers to the Oshima Bus site for latest timetable details. Oshima Bus publishes route-bus timetables, maps, fare information, riding guidance, and route maps; when checked, the route-bus page showed a timetable period from July 1, 2026 to September 30, 2026.

Those route pages help with geography, but they do not prove that your pet carrier will be accepted on the bus. If you plan to use Oshima Bus after a port change, confirm current pet handling directly with the operator before relying on the connection. Also plan payment: Oshima Bus’s FAQ says Suica, PASMO, and other transportation IC cards are not accepted, while cash or PayPay can be used.

Use Taxi Backup Early

Taxi backup is useful on Oshima, but it is not automatic. Oshima Tourism Association says taxis do not cruise, night service is very limited, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should inquire by phone. That means a taxi may help most when you call early, not when every ferry passenger has already reacted to the same port change.

When calling, state the pet, carrier, luggage, pickup point, destination port, passenger count, and desired arrival time. Do not assume a taxi can take the pet just because the pet is in a carrier. Ask plainly, and if the operator cannot confirm, keep another route in view.

Coordinate With Lodging Or A Waiting Base

If the port is not settled yet, a lodging lobby, port waiting area, or nearby waiting base can be more useful than moving too early. Ask your accommodation what they normally recommend when Motomachi Port and Okada Port are not yet confirmed, whether luggage can wait briefly, and whether they can help call a taxi.
