Short answer: After getting off an Oshima bus with a pet and luggage following a rebooked ferry arrival, do not decide to walk from the map distance alone. First stand in a safe waiting spot, confirm your actual location, check weather and daylight, ask lodging or local staff when possible, test whether your luggage and closed carrier are stable, and keep taxi or bus fallback open.

Start From A Safe Waiting Spot

The walking decision should not happen while you are beside the bus door, in the road edge, or blocking passengers. Step to a place where the carrier, luggage, and phone can be handled without forcing other people or vehicles to move around you.

Once you are settled, ask a simpler question: would this route still feel reasonable if the carrier must stay closed, the suitcase rolls poorly, rain starts, and your phone battery drops?

Confirm The Actual Location

Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page says Oshima uses Motomachi Port and Okada Port, and that arrival and departure ports may differ. Izu Oshima Navi explains that the two main ports are used depending on waves and wind. After ferry disruption, the route you expected may not match where you actually arrived or where the bus dropped you.

Before walking, confirm the stop name, nearby landmark, and destination. If you are calling lodging, state the actual place first, then say that you have luggage and a pet carrier.

Do Not Open The Carrier To Make Walking Easier

Tokai Kisen’s FAQ says pets must be inside an acceptable cage or carry-on with no face or body parts visible, and its pet page says open bags cannot be accepted. Oshima Bus’s FAQ says small pets may ride only if inside a cage.

Even after you leave the bus, the carrier should stay closed while you are in shared transport space or roadside flow. If the pet is stressed, the answer is usually to wait, call lodging, or choose a shorter confirmed transfer, not to improvise beside the road.

Check Weather, Wind, And Light

JMA provides English warnings and advisories. Its forecast information includes weather, winds, coastal ocean waves, temperatures, precipitation probability, precipitation nowcasts, thunder nowcasts, and hazardous wind potential nowcasts. These matter more when you are carrying a pet and luggage than when you are walking empty-handed.

A route that is fine in dry daylight can become a poor choice in heavy rain, strong wind, darkness, or low visibility. If conditions are uncertain, wait in a safer place and ask before committing.

Use Lodging And Taxi Information Before Giving Up On A Ride

Oshima Tourism Association lists local taxis and notes that cruising taxis are not available, night operation is very limited, and travelers should inquire by phone. Izu Oshima Navi also lists taxi companies and says taxi use should be checked by phone, with taxis commonly waiting at ports or the airport.

That does not mean a taxi will always be available where you are. It does mean you should call, or ask lodging to advise, before choosing a walk that might become difficult halfway through.

Keep Payment And Battery Ready

Oshima Bus’s FAQ says Suica and PASMO are not accepted, and route-bus payment is cash or PayPay. If the walk decision changes into another bus or taxi movement, payment and phone battery become part of the safety plan.

Do not spend your last phone power on repeated map zooming while standing exposed. Save enough battery for lodging contact, taxi contact, weather checks, and location sharing if needed.
