Short answer: Izu Oshima is close enough to Tokyo to feel like a real island trip without leaving the Tokyo area, but the ferry still needs proper planning. Use Tokai Kisen as the primary source for reservations, timetable, fares, boarding, and same-day operation status. Then build your day around the active Oshima port, not around a fixed assumption.

Which ship should you look for?
Tokai Kisen’s Oshima route can be served by high-speed jet ferry and large passenger ship services depending on date, direction, and timetable. The high-speed jet ferry is the simple choice when you want a faster crossing and a same-day island plan. Tokai Kisen describes its Seven Islands jetfoil route as serving Oshima, Toshima, Niijima, Shikinejima, and Kozushima, with a listed top speed of 80 km/h.
The large passenger ship is a different experience. Tokai Kisen’s Salvia-Maru page lists the regular route as Tokyo to Oshima, Toshima, Niijima, Shikinejima, and Kozushima. It also lists a 118 m ship, 6,099 tons, passenger capacity of 1,343, and onboard amenities such as a restaurant, vending machines, and coin-operated showers. If the ship itself is part of your trip, the large passenger ship can be the more memorable option. If your goal is to maximize time on the island, compare current sailing times directly on the official timetable.
Do not guess the port
Oshima has two main passenger ports used by ferries: Okada and Motomachi. Tokai Kisen’s operation status page specifically warns that Oshima has two ports and that arrival and departure ports may differ. This matters for buses, taxis, rental cars, accommodation pickup, and how much time you need after landing.
Before you leave Tokyo, check the Tokai Kisen operation status page and note the active Oshima port for your sailing. On the island, check again before returning. Tickets and boarding flow
The cleanest first step is to make a reservation through Tokai Kisen’s official reservation route. Tokai Kisen’s boarding guidance says that travelers with a reservation complete the purchase or ticket exchange at the boarding terminal, and that boarding procedures should be completed early. It also warns that a reservation may be forfeited if boarding procedures are not completed 15 minutes before departure.
That 15-minute rule should be treated as a last limit, not as a target. Give yourself extra time for ticket counters, unfamiliar terminal layout, luggage, weather notices, and restroom stops. If you are connecting from a train, airport, hotel, or another city, plan a buffer rather than building the trip around the final possible minute.

Who this ferry trip is best for
Izu Oshima works especially well for travelers who like transport, islands, volcano landscapes, ports, and compact adventure days. It can also be a strong first Tokyo Islands trip because the official ferry operator has English pages and the island has buses, taxis, rental cars, and visitor information. The route is still weather-sensitive, so it is better for travelers who can keep some flexibility in the schedule.
If your Japan itinerary is tightly packed around an international flight, a prepaid hotel in another region, or a same-night long-distance train, avoid placing Oshima on the final critical day. Put the island earlier in the trip, or allow an overnight buffer after the return.
