A pet trip to Oshima has to start with the ferry rule
Short answer: Do not treat Izu Oshima ferry pet travel as a casual add-on. Tokai Kisen has specific carrier, reservation, ticket, and ship-type rules. If your pet cannot fit the official carrier condition, or if you cannot handle a port change or weather disruption with the pet, choose a different plan.

The core Tokai Kisen pet rule
Tokai Kisen’s pet guidance says pets must be in a cage or basket no more than 45 cm per side, and the pet’s face and body must not be exposed onboard. This is the first filter. A soft tote, an open bag, or a carrier that leaves the pet exposed is not the plan to build around.
The official guidance also says pets should be placed in a designated space as guided by crew. This means you should not assume your pet can stay beside you in the exact way a hotel, train station, or private car might allow.
Jet ferry or large passenger ship?
Tokai Kisen says high-speed jet ferries accept only pets that fit in the 45 cm cage or basket, and that large pets cannot board. Large passenger ships have pet rooms, and travelers complete the procedure at the onboard information desk after boarding. The right ship is therefore not only a speed question. It is also a pet-handling question.
If you are traveling with a small pet that fits the carrier rule, compare the official timetable, reservation availability, and same-day operation status. If the animal is larger, anxious in crowds, sensitive to heat, or difficult to keep fully enclosed, the responsible answer may be not to make this trip by ferry.
What to tell Tokai Kisen when reserving
Tokai Kisen asks travelers to give pet information at reservation: pet type, number of pets and people, and size. For internet reservations, its pet guidance says to email Tokai Kisen with the reservation number, name, pet type, number of pets and people, and size.
At the counter, travelers should present the passenger ticket, state the destination, and buy the pet ticket. During congestion, Tokai Kisen says pet carry-on may be refused. That is why a pet trip should not be built around peak crowding, a final-day return, or a plan with no backup accommodation.
Oshima after arrival: buses, taxis, and lodging
The ferry rule is only the first step. Oshima Bus FAQ says small pets may ride only in a cage. The Oshima Tourism Association transport page says taxis do not cruise around the island, night service is mostly not operating, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should call by phone. Put those two facts together: a pet traveler should precheck the bus, taxi, rental car, and lodging plan before booking the ferry.
Ask lodging providers how they handle Okada Port versus Motomachi Port arrivals. Ask taxi companies whether they can carry your pet in its carrier. If you plan to use buses, keep the carrier suitable for carrying through queues, stairs, sidewalks, and waiting areas without exposing the pet.

- Use a carrier that closes fully so the pet’s face and body are not exposed onboard.

When not to take the pet
Do not force the trip if the carrier rule is uncertain, if the weather is unstable, if the return ferry is critical, or if the animal has trouble staying enclosed. Izu Oshima is an island route, not a city subway transfer. A calm plan is kinder to the traveler, the animal, crew, and other passengers.
