First, Do Not Wait For A Cruising Taxi

Oshima Tourism Association says taxis do not cruise on Izu Oshima, night service is very limited, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should inquire by phone. That single fact changes the plan: a taxi backup is not a street-hail backup. It is a phone-confirmed vehicle, usually connected to port, airport, or company availability.

If no taxi answers immediately, do not spend the whole ferry buffer making the same call. Confirm the correct port, check the bus option, reduce luggage complexity, and decide whether your current location is still the best waiting point.

Confirm The Port Before Solving Transport

Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page asks users to refresh before checking and shows Oshima ship type, port, operation status, and notes. It also warns that Oshima has two ports, Okada Port and Motomachi Port, and that arrival and departure ports may differ. The same page provides same-day Oshima port guidance by phone.

A no-taxi problem is worse if you are aiming for the wrong port. Before choosing a bus, walking segment, lodging wait, or another taxi call, confirm whether the ferry departure is from Motomachi or Okada. Do not use yesterday’s port as the answer.

Check Whether Oshima Bus Is Actually Usable

Izu Oshima Navi says travelers should check Oshima Bus for the latest timetables, and it notes that Oshima’s two main ports are used according to the day’s wind and waves, so the useful timetable changes with the day’s departure port. Oshima Bus can be a real backup, but only if the timing, route, luggage, and pet rule work together.

Oshima Bus’s FAQ says pets may be brought only if they are small breeds and inside a cage. It also says Suica, PASMO, and other IC cards are not accepted; cash or PayPay is accepted, and change is limited to 50-500 yen coins and 1,000 yen notes. If your pet carrier is large, your bags are too many, or you have no small cash and weak phone battery, the bus backup may fail at the door.

Keep The Pet Rule Separate From The Taxi Problem

Tokai Kisen’s pet page says pets must be inside a cage or basket no more than 45cm per side, with the whole body inside and no face or body visible. It says open-top bags such as tote bags cannot be accepted, and pets may be refused during congestion. For jet ferries, only pets fitting inside the 45cm cage or basket can board.

Do not solve the no-taxi problem by loosening the carrier rule. If the carrier is hard to carry, reduce other luggage, store a bag if possible, or wait in a better place. A pet that reaches the port in a noncompliant setup can still lose the boarding attempt.

A no-taxi transfer with a pet is often a luggage problem disguised as a transport problem.
