Oshima Ferry Pet Taxi-Retry Call Script Guide
Short answer: If your first taxi call on Izu Oshima fails while you are traveling with a pet, do not keep calling with vague information. First confirm the Tokai Kisen port, ship time, carrier rule, luggage load, and pickup window. Then retry with a short script that gives the driver enough facts to say yes, no, or “call again later” before your ferry buffer disappears.
Last checked: August 25, 2026. Taxi availability, taxi phone handling, ferry operation status, Motomachi Port or Okada Port choice, pet acceptance, bus rules, payment options, weather, and sea conditions can change. Always follow current Tokai Kisen, Oshima Tourism Association, Oshima Bus, taxi-company, terminal, lodging, and local staff guidance.

Why A Taxi Retry Needs A Script
Oshima Tourism Association gives the key taxi reality for visitors: taxis do not cruise, night service is very limited, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should inquire by phone. That means the second or third call is not only “Can you come?” It is a fast check of whether a taxi can match your location, destination port, pet carrier, luggage, and ferry deadline.
The script also protects the driver from guessing. If you say only “I need a taxi,” the answer may depend on details you have not given yet. If you say “two adults, one small dog in a closed carrier, one suitcase, from lodging in Motomachi to Okada Port, ferry at 14:20, can you pick up by 13:25?” the operator can make a real decision.
Confirm The Port Before Calling Again
Tokai Kisen asks users to refresh its operation-status page before checking. For Oshima, the page shows ship type, operation status, notes, and the arrival or departure port. It also warns that Oshima uses both Okada Port and Motomachi Port, and that arrival and departure ports may differ. The same-day Oshima port phone number shown there is 04992-2-5522.
Izu Oshima Navi explains the same practical issue from the local side: Motomachi and Okada are used according to same-day waves and wind, so bus timing and route planning depend on that day’s port. A taxi retry before port confirmation can send you to the wrong side of the island.
Keep The Ferry Counter Buffer Visible
Tokai Kisen’s boarding-flow page says a prepayment voucher must be exchanged at the counter on the day of departure, boarding procedures should be completed early, and a reservation may be forfeited if procedures are not completed 15 minutes before departure. With a pet, add time for the pet ticket and any staff guidance.
For the taxi call, do not ask only “Can you arrive before departure?” Ask for a pickup time that still leaves room for the ticket counter, pet ticket, luggage, carrier handling, and boarding procedure. If the operator cannot give a pickup time inside that window, treat the answer as a no and move to the next fallback.
Say The Pet Facts Clearly
Tokai Kisen’s pet page says pets must be inside a cage or basket no more than 45cm per side, with the whole body kept inside and the face and body not visible. It says jet ferries accept only pets fitting inside that size, and it asks travelers to provide pet type, pet count, passenger count, and size information. Pet tickets are purchased at the counter after presenting the passenger ticket and destination. Open-top bags cannot be accepted, and pets may be refused during congestion.
Taxi companies may have their own handling. Do not assume that “pet” is enough. Say “small dog in a closed carrier,” “cat in a hard carrier,” or “pet carrier plus one suitcase.” If the pet is stressed, say that you need a direct transfer and ask whether waiting at the current location is better than moving to another pickup point.
Use This Taxi-Retry Call Script
Start with the shortest complete version. Keep your reservation number, port, and pickup address visible before dialing.
- Hello. I need a taxi today on Izu Oshima.
- I am at [current place, nearby landmark, or lodging name].
- I need to go to [Motomachi Port / Okada Port / Oshima Airport / lodging].
- My Tokai Kisen ship departs at [time], and I need time for the ferry counter and pet ticket.
- We are [number] people, with [number] suitcases.
- We have [small dog/cat/other pet] inside a closed carrier.
- Can you pick us up by [latest safe pickup time]?
- If not, what is the earliest possible pickup time, and should we wait here or move to another place?
- Can we pay by [cash / other method], and should we prepare small bills?
- May I repeat the pickup place, destination, and time to confirm?
What To Say If The First Answer Is No
A no can mean “no taxi now,” “not from that place,” “not with that luggage,” “not enough time,” or “call back after the port is decided.” Ask one follow-up, not five: “Is there a better pickup place or a later time you recommend?” If the answer is still uncertain, thank them and move to the next operator, lodging desk, terminal staff, or tourism-association guidance rather than spending the whole ferry buffer on calls.
If you are calling from lodging, ask the lodging whether they can help with the pickup location and Japanese place name. If you are near a terminal, ask staff where waiting with luggage and a pet carrier is appropriate. Oshima Tourism Association lists office hours and a phone number; during office hours, it can be a useful official starting point for local transport context.
Keep A Bus Backup Only If It Actually Works
Oshima Bus can still be a backup, but only when the rules match your situation. Oshima Bus’s FAQ says small pets may ride only if they are inside a cage. It also says Suica, PASMO, and other IC cards are not accepted; cash or PayPay is accepted, and change is limited to 50-500 yen coins and 1,000 yen notes.
Before switching from taxi retry to bus, check three things: the pet is still in a compliant cage, the luggage is small enough to manage safely, and payment is ready. Then check the latest timetable through Oshima Bus or route tools that account for the day’s Motomachi or Okada port choice.
Know When To Stop Retrying
Set a stop time before the call spiral starts. For example: “If I do not have a confirmed pickup by 60 minutes before the ferry counter deadline, I will switch to the waiting-base plan.” Your actual number may be different, but the decision should be made before stress takes over.
Stopping does not mean giving up. It means protecting the pet, keeping the carrier closed, finding a stable waiting place, asking official staff what the next realistic movement is, and avoiding a last-minute transfer that misses the counter anyway.
Taxi-Retry Checklist
- Refresh Tokai Kisen operation status and confirm Motomachi Port or Okada Port.
- Write down current location, destination, ship time, and latest safe pickup time.
- Keep the pet inside a compliant closed carrier.
- Prepare passenger ticket, reservation number, pet details, cash, phone battery, and luggage count.
- Call with the full script, then repeat the agreed pickup place and time.
- If the answer is no or uncertain, ask one practical follow-up, then move to the next fallback.
- Switch to lodging, terminal, bus, or staff-guided waiting before the ferry buffer disappears.
