Short answer

The Chofu to Kozushima flight is the cliff-top airport branch of Tokyo island aviation. UMISORA says Kozushima is about 45 minutes by plane, and New Central Airservice operates the Chofu-Kozushima route with small Dornier 228 aircraft. It is a beautiful route to plan, but not one to wing casually: check the current timetable, fare, 5 kg baggage rule, check-in window, village transfer, weather, and same-day operation status before you commit.

Last checked: August 21, 2026. Flight schedules, fares, aircraft assignment, check-in rules, baggage rules, special-item acceptance, airport access, bus timing, taxi availability, weather decisions, and same-day operation status can change. Always confirm current details on New Central Airservice and official island-access pages before travel.

Why this route feels different

UMISORA describes Kozushima Airport as an airport with a spectacular view on top of a precipice. That image is part of the route’s appeal, but it should also make travelers more careful. A small aircraft route to an island airport is not only about the time in the air. It is also about weather, airport access, local transport, and what happens if the flight or sea branch changes.

Kozushima itself is more than an airport stop. UMISORA says the island is about 3 hours by high-speed boat and 45 minutes by plane, and notes Akasaki Promenade, Tenjo-san, and Tokyo’s first Starry Sky Reserve recognition in December 2020. The aircraft is a strong gateway, but the island plan still needs a transport backup.

Chofu side

New Central Airservice’s airport guide lists Chofu Airfield at Nishimachi 290-3, Chofu City, Tokyo 182-0032, with the Chofu counter phone number 0422-31-4191. It says Chofu Station north exit is about 15 minutes away by Odakyu Bus, and taxi access from Chofu Station north exit or Musashisakai Station south exit is also about 15 minutes.

Use that access time as the beginning of the route, not as a footnote. New Central Airservice says check-in is from 60 minutes before departure to 30 minutes before departure, and that procedures should be completed 30 minutes before departure. A small-airfield trip is more enjoyable when you are not sprinting into the counter window.

Kozushima side

New Central Airservice lists Kozushima Airport at Kanenaga, Kozushima Village, Tokyo 100-0601, with the Kozushima Airport phone number 04992-8-1116. UMISORA’s Kozushima Airport page lists the same phone number and describes the airport as being on top of a precipice.

Arrival transport needs a plan. New Central Airservice says Kozushima Airport to the village center is about 15 minutes by taxi or bus. The same airport guide warns that island airports do not have waiting taxis and that buses are limited, so travelers should prearrange taxis or check bus times before relying on a smooth connection.

Aircraft and route scale

New Central Airservice says it uses the Dornier 228 type. Its aircraft page identifies the Dornier 228-212, lists crew 2 and passengers 19, and describes the type as suited to short runways and island routes. It also warns that performance values vary with passengers, cargo weight, and weather.

That is exactly why the Chofu-Kozushima route is interesting. You can feel the aircraft scale in the planning: seats are limited, baggage matters, and weather decisions can shape the day. Treat the flight as a current-status route rather than a fixed commuter assumption.

Baggage and large items

New Central Airservice says free baggage is 5 kg per passenger, including carry-on and checked baggage. At the time checked, the Chofu-Kozushima excess-baggage rate was listed as 350 yen per kg, but excess baggage may cost extra and may not be accepted in some cases.

Large items need advance confirmation. New Central Airservice warns that surfboards, fishing rods, cooler boxes, and bicycles in rinko bags may not be accepted depending on size and weight and should be confirmed by phone before reservation. If your Kozushima plan includes snorkeling gear, hiking gear, a tripod, or a large bag, solve that before the travel day.

Booking and fare

New Central Airservice’s timetable and fare page has a Chofu-Kozushima section with monthly timetable links and online reservation access. At the time checked, the regular fare display showed 17,900 yen for an adult one-way ticket, 12,500 yen for a child one-way ticket, and 32,600 yen for an adult round trip. Treat those as checked fare facts, not permanent prices.

The user guide says online reservations are accepted 24 hours and that same-day online reservations are possible until three hours before departure. It lists phone reservation counters including Chofu 0422-31-4191 and Kozushima Airport 04992-8-1116. Use the phone route when baggage, assistance, pets, or special items are part of the plan.

Status and sea-route comparison

UMISORA’s Kozushima operation-status page includes New Central Airservice flights between Chofu Airport and Kozushima Airport. It says information is as of the listed update time and should be refreshed before viewing. It also says conditional or other-information status should be checked on the operator website.

Kozushima also has sea access. UMISORA lists Tako Bay / Miura Port, Maehama (Kozushima) Port, and Kozushima Airport as access points. For a flexible trip, compare air and sea after checking the latest official status. For a tight trip, avoid stacking flight, bus, taxi, ship, and lodging assumptions into one fragile chain.

Quick planning table

Question Official check Planning result
Is the route running today? New Central Airservice and UMISORA status Use current operation status, not an old timetable memory
Can I take this bag? New Central Airservice baggage page Stay near 5 kg or confirm excess and special items early
How early should I arrive? New Central Airservice user guide Check in between 60 and 30 minutes before departure
How do I leave Kozushima Airport? Airport guide, village bus, taxi, or lodging source Do not assume waiting taxis or frequent buses
Is sea travel better? UMISORA and ship operator status Compare air and sea if weather or baggage makes flying fragile
