Start with the island, not a checklist of tiny stops
Short answer: Izu Oshima is the Tokyo island to consider when you want a real island landscape, ferry or small-aircraft access, volcano scenery, black coast, hot springs, and slower travel without going far from Tokyo. It is not a normal city day trip. Plan it around access, weather, port choice, and how you will move after arrival.

Why Izu Oshima is worth a focused guide
JNTO describes Izu Oshima as the largest island in the Izu archipelago, a 91-square-kilometer island with Mt. Mihara, hiking trails, cycling courses, beaches, swimming, and diving. The Oshima Tourism Association says the island sits about 120 km south of central Tokyo, has Mt. Mihara at 758 m, belongs to Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, and has about 97 percent of its area protected under the Natural Parks Act.
That combination is the point: Izu Oshima is close to Tokyo, but the travel rhythm is island travel. Ferries can be affected by sea conditions, flights can be affected by weather, bus schedules are not as dense as a city network, and taxis should not be treated like Tokyo taxis. The reward is a compact island where volcano, coast, onsen, port town, local buses, and rental vehicles can all fit into a short trip.
How to get there
Most visitors choose between Tokai Kisen ferry access and New Central Airservice flights from Chofu. Tokai Kisen should be your source for ferry timetables, fares, reservations, boarding flow, and operation status. New Central Airservice is the source for Chofu island flights, including Oshima, Niijima, Kozushima, and Miyakejima routes.
For a first trip, choose the access method that matches your risk tolerance. A fast ferry can make a compact island visit easier, a large passenger ship can make the journey itself part of the experience, and a small aircraft is appealing for aviation fans and travelers who want the shortest air link. Whatever you choose, do not plan from memory. Check the current official timetable and same-day operation status.

Can you visit without a car?
Yes, but the plan must be simpler. Oshima Bus publishes route bus timetables and island-map materials, and the Oshima Tourism Association lists route buses, sightseeing buses, taxis, rental cars, rental bikes, and rental cycles as island transport options. A no-car plan works best when you choose one main area and one backup, instead of trying to collect every named viewpoint in one day.
If you want to move freely between port, Mt. Mihara, south coast, Oshima Park, onsen, and accommodation, a rental car or planned taxi may be easier. The Oshima Tourism Association says taxis do not cruise around the island, night service is mostly not operating, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should call by phone. That is not a warning against taxis; it is a warning against improvising them late.
How many days should you give it?
A very compact visit can work if the access, weather, and port choice line up, but Izu Oshima becomes much better with one overnight. With a night on the island, you can separate arrival logistics from sightseeing, keep a buffer for ferry or flight changes, and choose a calmer route for Mt. Mihara, the coast, or onsen.
If your international flight or nonrefundable onward travel is close, put Oshima earlier in the itinerary. Island access is reliable enough to plan with official checks, but not something to stack against a critical same-day departure.
First-time planning rules
- Check Tokai Kisen or New Central Airservice directly for current access.
- For ferry travel, check the active Oshima port; Okada and Motomachi are not interchangeable for every plan.
- Use Oshima Bus official timetables if traveling without a car.
- Call ahead for taxis, lodging pickup, rental vehicles, and activities when timing matters.
- Keep Mt. Mihara and coastal walking flexible when wind, rain, fog, heat, or alerts make conditions poor.
- Use JNTO and local official pages for general orientation, then use operators for current details.
