Oshima Ferry Pet Delay-And-Rebooking Guide
Short answer: If an Izu Oshima ferry delay or cancellation affects a trip with a pet, separate the problem into four decisions: current operation status, ticket or rebooking action, pet-carrier compliance, and where you and the pet can safely wait. Do not treat a delay, a port change, and a cancellation as the same thing.
Last checked: August 25, 2026. Operation status, cancellation handling, refund counters, rebooking routes, pet-ticket handling, pet-room procedures, port choice, bus timetables, taxi availability, lodging backup, weather, and sea conditions can change. Always confirm current official guidance before travel.

Check Status Before You Move
Start with Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page, not a saved timetable screenshot. The Oshima section shows ship type, port, operation status, and notes, and the page tells users to refresh before checking. Large passenger ship information is updated after 09:00 with final decisions planned around 17:00, while high-speed jet ferry decisions are around 06:00.
With a pet, this first check matters more than usual because every later step depends on the actual ship and port. A port change may only change your transfer plan. A delay may change your waiting base. A cancellation may change the ticket problem completely.
Know What Cancellation Changes
Tokai Kisen’s English cancellation rules say that if the outbound journey is cancelled, outbound and return reservations are automatically cancelled without cancellation fees. If the outbound and return were booked separately, the return reservation still needs separate cancellation through customer service.
If the return journey is cancelled, Tokai Kisen says the return reservation is automatically cancelled and no cancellation fee is charged. For another ferry, travelers should make a new reservation through customer service or at the counter at each port. If ferry tickets have already been issued, bring them to the counter on the departure day.
Do Not Lose The Ticket Trail
Keep reservation numbers, issued tickets, pet information, and payment method together. Tokai Kisen says issued ferry tickets not used after a return cancellation can be refunded at port counters within 30 days, excluding tours and special discount tickets, and that refunds to domestic or overseas bank accounts are not available.
Tokai Kisen’s boarding-flow page also says that for service cancellations beyond the company’s control, a cancellation fee is not charged, people with advance tickets may request a refund within 30 days at the place of purchase, and using another departure time requires a new reservation.
Protect The Boarding Window
Tokai Kisen says boarding procedures should be completed as early as possible and that a reservation may be forfeited if procedures are not completed 15 minutes before departure. Its English FAQ advises arriving about one hour before large passenger ships and 30 minutes before high-speed jet ferries.
In a disruption, do not let the rebooking conversation consume the entire boarding window. If a counter visit is required, assume you need more time than a normal traveler because you are also managing a pet carrier, luggage, possible pet ticket, and a place for the pet to wait without blocking other passengers.
Keep The Pet Rule Non-Negotiable
Tokai Kisen’s English FAQ says pets may board if placed in a cage or carry-on with sides no longer than 45 cm, with face and body parts not visible. The Japanese pet page says pets must remain fully inside a cage or basket no more than 45cm per side and placed where crew instruct.
Large passenger ships have pet rooms, and the pet page says travelers should complete the onboard information-desk procedure after boarding. Jet ferries accept only pets that fit inside the 45cm cage or basket; large pets cannot board. If a cancellation pushes you toward a different ship type, recheck the pet rule before assuming the same plan still works.
Build A Waiting Base
Tokai Kisen says that when a return leg is cancelled and a traveler extends the stay, it is not responsible for lodging, meals, or other transport expenses. That does not mean panic; it means the backup budget and waiting base should be planned by the traveler.
Ask lodging whether you can extend, hold luggage, wait in a suitable area, or return later if the ferry decision changes. If lodging cannot help, choose a public waiting base near the confirmed port and keep the pet in the carrier. A good waiting base is not just comfortable; it gives you phone reception, access to payment, a route to the correct port, and enough time to react.
Rebuild Bus And Taxi Plans Around The Actual Port
Oshima Tourism Association says Okada Port and Motomachi Port are used according to same-day sea conditions, and that the departure port is not known until the day. Izu Oshima Navi also explains that wind and wave conditions affect which main port is used, so the useful timetable changes with the day’s port.
Oshima Bus says pets are allowed only if they are small breeds and inside a cage. It also says Suica, PASMO, and other IC cards are not accepted, while cash or PayPay can be used, and change is limited to 50-500 yen coins and 1,000 yen notes. If you are already stressed by rebooking, solve payment before boarding the bus.
For taxi backup, be specific. Oshima Tourism Association says taxis do not cruise, night service is very limited, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should inquire by phone. Call with the actual port, pickup place, passenger count, pet, carrier size, and luggage amount.
A Pet Ferry Disruption Checklist
- Refresh Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page and identify whether this is a delay, port change, or cancellation.
- Keep reservation number, issued tickets, pet details, and payment method together.
- If cancelled, confirm whether the reservation was automatically cancelled or whether a separate return booking needs action.
- If changing ferries, contact customer service or the port counter and treat it as a new reservation unless official guidance says otherwise.
- Recheck whether the replacement ship accepts the pet and carrier size.
- Choose a waiting base with phone access, luggage control, and a route to the confirmed port.
- Rebuild bus or taxi transport around the actual port, pet carrier, bags, and payment.
