Oshima Ferry Pet Overnight Extension Guide
Short answer: If a return ferry from Izu Oshima is cancelled and you are traveling with a pet, solve the night before you solve tomorrow. Confirm the cancellation and ticket trail, secure a pet-acceptable place to stay or wait, protect food, water, carrier rest, and luggage, then rebuild the next-day ferry, bus, taxi, and port plan from official status.
Last checked: August 25, 2026. Operation status, return-cancellation handling, lodging availability, pet acceptance, pet carrier rules, bus timetables, taxi availability, port choice, fares, weather, and sea conditions can change. Always confirm current official guidance and direct operator answers before travel.

First, Confirm That This Is An Overnight Problem
Start by refreshing Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page and checking the Oshima section for the actual ship type, port, operation status, and notes. The page says information is current as of the listed update time and users should refresh before viewing. Large passenger ship information is updated after 09:00 with final decisions planned around 17:00, while high-speed jet ferry decisions are around 06:00.
If the return is simply delayed, you may need a waiting base. If the return is cancelled and no same-day substitute works for your pet, you need an overnight extension plan. That changes the priority from “reach the pier fast” to “keep the pet, tickets, bags, and next morning under control.”
Know Who Pays For The Extra Night
Tokai Kisen’s boarding-flow page says that if the return leg of a round trip is cancelled and a traveler needs to extend the stay, Tokai Kisen is not responsible for lodging, meals, or other transport expenses such as airline tickets. Treat the extra night as a traveler-managed backup cost unless current official guidance says otherwise.
That cost note is exactly why a pet traveler should act early. A pet-acceptable room, carrier-friendly taxi, and next-morning transfer can disappear faster than ordinary seats. Once you know the return is not happening, call lodging before the whole port crowd starts making the same call.
Keep The Ticket Trail Clean
Tokai Kisen’s cancellation rules say that if a return journey is cancelled, the return reservation is automatically cancelled and no cancellation fee is charged. If you want another ferry, Tokai Kisen says to make a new reservation through customer service or the counter at each port, and customers with issued ferry tickets should present them at the counter on the departure day.
If issued ferry tickets are not used, Tokai Kisen says refunds are handled at port counters within 30 days, excluding tours and special discount tickets, and that refunds to domestic or overseas bank accounts are not available. Keep issued tickets, reservation numbers, payment method, pet details, and lodging receipts in one pouch or phone folder before you repack.
Ask Lodging Pet Questions Directly
Oshima Tourism Association’s accommodation page lists lodging by northern, central, and southern areas. It also says Okada Port in the north and Motomachi Port in the central area are used according to same-day sea conditions, and the departure port is not known until the day.
When you call or message lodging, do not only ask, “Do you have a room?” Ask whether the same pet can stay, whether the carrier must remain closed indoors, whether food and water can be prepared or stored, whether luggage can be held after checkout, and how early you can leave for either Motomachi Port or Okada Port. If the tourism association is open, its page lists office hours of 08:30 to 17:00 and phone number 04992-2-2177, which can help as a local information contact.
Reset The Pet Overnight Kit
Tokai Kisen’s FAQ says pets may board if placed in a cage or carry-on with sides no longer than 45 cm, with face and body parts not visible. The pet page says the pet must remain fully inside a cage or basket no more than 45cm per side and be placed where crew instruct.
For an overnight extension, the carrier is not just a ferry requirement. It becomes the bus, taxi, lobby, and waiting-room rule that keeps the plan possible. Before nightfall, separate pet food, water, cleanup supplies, medication, towel, charger, and next-day documents from the main luggage. Do not bury them in a suitcase that may be held by lodging or moved separately.
Plan Tomorrow From The Real Port
Tokai Kisen notes that Oshima has two ports, Okada Port and Motomachi Port, and that arrival and departure ports may differ. Oshima Tourism Association gives the same practical warning: the island uses Okada and Motomachi according to same-day sea conditions, and the departure port is not known until the day.
Izu Oshima Navi says travelers should check Oshima Bus for the latest timetables and that the useful timetable changes with the day’s port because Motomachi and Okada are used according to wind and wave conditions. Do not make tomorrow’s bus or taxi plan from tonight’s assumed port. Wake up, refresh official status, and rebuild from the actual departure port.
Use Bus Or Taxi With Pet Limits In Mind
Oshima Bus’s FAQ says pets may be brought only if they are small breeds and inside a cage. It also says Suica, PASMO, and other IC cards are not accepted; cash or PayPay is accepted, and change is limited to 50-500 yen coins and 1,000 yen notes.
Oshima Tourism Association says taxis do not cruise, night service is very limited, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should inquire by phone. Izu Oshima Navi also lists local taxi companies and says taxis basically wait at ports or the airport. If you need a pet-friendly pickup from lodging at a specific time, call with the port, pickup address, carrier size, luggage, passenger count, and whether you need an early morning ride.
Overnight Extension Checklist
- Refresh Tokai Kisen’s operation status and confirm that same-day return is no longer workable.
- Keep issued tickets, reservation number, payment method, pet details, and contact numbers together.
- Call current lodging first; ask specifically about the pet, carrier, luggage, food, water, and early departure.
- If lodging cannot extend, use the tourism association or direct lodging lists to look by area: north for Okada, central for Motomachi, south only if transport is realistic.
- Separate the pet overnight kit from checked or stored luggage.
- Before sleep, make a morning plan but mark it provisional until the official port and ship status update.
- In the morning, rebuild ferry, bus, taxi, and boarding-buffer timing from the actual port.
