Oshima Ferry Pet Next-Morning Reboarding Guide
Short answer: The morning after an Izu Oshima ferry cancellation, do not leave for the port on yesterday’s assumptions. Refresh Tokai Kisen’s status, confirm the actual ship and port, make or confirm the new reservation, keep issued tickets ready, rebuild the bus or taxi route, and keep your pet fully inside the required carrier until staff tell you otherwise.
Last checked: August 25, 2026. Operation status, port choice, departure time, reservation handling, ticket-counter instructions, pet acceptance, pet carrier rules, pet-room procedure, bus timetables, taxi availability, fares, weather, and sea conditions can change. Always confirm current official guidance before travel.

Start With The Live Ferry Status
Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page says information is current as of the listed update time and asks users to refresh before viewing. For Oshima, the page separates ship type, port, operation status, and notes. It also warns that Oshima has two ports, Okada Port and Motomachi Port, and that arrival and departure ports may differ.
For a next-morning reboarding plan, that detail matters more than speed. A plan built around Motomachi Port can fail if the day uses Okada Port, and a plan built around a high-speed jet ferry can fail if your pet does not meet the jet-ferry carrier requirement. Confirm the current status before checkout, before calling a taxi, and again before leaving if the sea is unsettled.
Rebuild The Reservation, Do Not Just Reuse Yesterday
Tokai Kisen’s cancellation rules say that when a return journey is cancelled, the return reservation is automatically cancelled and no cancellation fee is charged. If you want to use another ferry, Tokai Kisen says to make a new reservation through customer service or at the counter at each port.
If you already have issued ferry tickets, Tokai Kisen says to present them at the counter on the departure day. If issued tickets are not used, Tokai Kisen says refunds are handled at port counters within 30 days, excluding tours and special discount tickets, and bank-account refunds are not available. In practice, keep the issued ticket, reservation number, payment method, phone, pet details, and yesterday’s cancellation context together before you enter the line.
Protect The Counter Deadline
Tokai Kisen’s boarding-flow page says prepayment vouchers must be exchanged for boarding cards at the ticket counter on the departure day. It also says boarding procedures should be completed early and that a reservation may be forfeited if the procedure is not completed 15 minutes before departure.
The FAQ gives a bigger planning buffer: arrive about one hour before departure for large passenger ships and about 30 minutes before departure for high-speed jet ferries. A pet traveler should treat those as minimum morning targets, not comfort margins. You may need extra time for the pet notice, the counter conversation, the carrier check, luggage adjustment, or a changed port.
Match The Pet Plan To The Ship Type
Tokai Kisen’s FAQ says pets may board if placed in a cage or carry-on with sides no longer than 45 cm, with face and body parts not visible. The pet page says the pet must remain fully inside a cage or basket no more than 45cm per side and be placed where crew instruct.
Large passenger ships have pet rooms, and Tokai Kisen says travelers complete the onboard information-desk procedure after boarding. Jet ferries are stricter in a practical way: only pets that fit inside the 45cm cage or basket can board, and large pets cannot board. When you make the new reservation, communicate pet type, number of pets and people, and size so the morning plan matches the ship that is actually operating.
Choose Bus Or Taxi After The Port Is Known
Oshima Tourism Association says Okada Port in the north and Motomachi Port in the central area are used according to same-day sea conditions, and the departure port is not known until the day. Izu Oshima Navi gives the same practical warning and says travelers should check Oshima Bus for the latest timetables because the useful timetable changes with the day’s port.
If using the bus, check the current Oshima Bus route page and timetable for the actual port and date. Oshima Bus’s FAQ says pets may be brought only if they are small breeds and inside a cage. It also says Suica, PASMO, and other IC cards are not accepted; cash or PayPay is accepted, and change is limited to 50-500 yen coins and 1,000 yen notes.
Use Taxi As A Phone-Confirmed Backup
Oshima Tourism Association says taxis do not cruise, night service is very limited, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should inquire by phone. Izu Oshima Navi also lists local taxi companies and says taxis basically wait at ports or the airport.
Call before you depend on a taxi. Give the pickup place, port, target departure time, passenger count, luggage amount, pet type, and carrier size. If a taxi cannot take the pet or cannot reach you early enough, you still need time to switch to bus, ask lodging about a ride, or move luggage separately.
Morning Reboarding Checklist
- Refresh Tokai Kisen’s operation status and record the update time, ship type, departure time, and port.
- Confirm whether your previous return reservation was cancelled and whether you now need a new reservation.
- Put issued tickets, reservation number, payment method, identification, phone charger, and pet details in one accessible place.
- Check whether the operating ship is a large passenger ship or high-speed jet ferry, then confirm that your carrier plan fits the pet rule.
- Choose bus or taxi only after the actual port is known.
- Prepare cash, PayPay, small change, and a backup payment method before leaving lodging.
- Reach the counter with enough time to complete the boarding procedure before the 15-minute forfeiture point.
- After boarding starts, hand the passenger ticket to gate staff, keep the stub or boarding card, and follow pet-room or crew instructions.
If The Morning Changes Again
If the next morning’s ferry is delayed, conditional, moved, or cancelled again, return to the same order: status first, reservation second, pet and luggage third, transport fourth. Do not let a bus timetable, taxi promise, or checkout time become more important than the official ship and port decision.
For a pet traveler, the most stable plan is the one that can be rebuilt without unpacking everything. Keep water, cleanup supplies, medication, towel, charger, documents, and the carrier accessible until the animal is safely through the next boarding step.
