Oshima Ferry Pet Morning Port-Change Transfer Guide
Short answer: On Izu Oshima, a pet traveler’s morning transfer should start with the official departure port, not the nearest bus stop. Confirm Tokai Kisen’s same-day Oshima status, decide whether you are going to Motomachi Port or Okada Port, keep the pet inside the required carrier, then choose bus, taxi, luggage handling, and checkout timing around that confirmed port.
Last checked: August 25, 2026. Departure port, operation status, departure time, counter handling, pet acceptance, pet carrier rules, bus timetables, taxi availability, fares, luggage rules, weather, and sea conditions can change. Always confirm current official guidance and direct operator answers before travel.

Confirm The Port Before Checkout
Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page says its information is current as of the listed update time and asks users to refresh before checking. For Oshima departures, the table shows the ship type, departure port, operation status, and notes. The same page warns that Oshima has two ports, Okada Port and Motomachi Port, and that arrival and departure ports may differ.
Oshima Tourism Association makes the same point for travelers planning from lodging: Okada Port is in the northern area, Motomachi Port is in the central area, the two are used according to same-day sea conditions, and the departure port is not known until the day. If you check out and move before this is clear, you can put the pet, luggage, and ferry counter deadline on the wrong side of the island.
Use A Three-Step Morning Decision
First, refresh Tokai Kisen and note the update time, ship type, departure time, port, and any conditional note. Large passenger ship information is normally updated after 09:00 with a final decision planned around 17:00, while high-speed jet ferry decisions are around 06:00. Tokai Kisen also lists a same-day Oshima port information phone number, 04992-2-5522, on the operation-status page.
Second, decide whether the pet can use the ship type that is actually running. Third, choose transport from your current place to the confirmed port. This order matters. A taxi booked to Motomachi does not help if Okada becomes the departure port, and a bus timetable for Okada does not solve a jet-ferry pet-size problem.
Keep The Carrier Rule In The Middle
Tokai Kisen’s FAQ says pets may board if placed in a cage or carry-on with sides no longer than 45 cm, with face and body parts not visible. The pet page says the pet must remain fully inside a cage or basket no more than 45cm per side and be placed where crew instruct.
That carrier is also the key to the transfer. Oshima Bus’s FAQ says pets may be brought only if they are small breeds and inside a cage. For taxis, you should phone ahead and describe the pet, carrier size, passenger count, and luggage. Do not assume that a pet that is calm in lodging will be accepted by every transport option unless the carrier plan matches the operator’s rule.
If You Use Oshima Bus
Izu Oshima Navi says travelers should check Oshima Bus for the latest timetables and explains that the useful timetable changes with the day’s port because Motomachi and Okada are used according to wind and wave conditions. Oshima Bus’s route page provides current timetable, route map, riding guide, fare, and hand-luggage links for the displayed service period.
Before leaving lodging, check the bus page for the active timetable period and the actual port. Oshima Bus’s FAQ says Suica, PASMO, and other IC cards are not accepted; cash or PayPay is accepted. It also says change is limited to 50-500 yen coins and 1,000 yen notes. For a pet traveler, the practical bus kit is simple: closed carrier, small cash, phone battery, luggage you can carry quickly, and enough time to miss one connection without missing the ship.
If You Use Taxi
Oshima Tourism Association says taxis do not cruise, night service is very limited, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should inquire by phone. Izu Oshima Navi also lists local taxi companies and says taxis basically wait at ports or the airport.
Use taxi as a phone-confirmed plan, not a wish. Say the confirmed port, pickup address, target counter time, pet type, carrier size, passenger count, suitcase count, and whether you need a quick stop before the terminal. If the port is still unconfirmed, ask whether the taxi can wait for the official decision or whether you should call back. A vague booking can fail exactly when everyone else is also trying to move.
Do Not Let Luggage Trap The Pet Plan
Morning port changes become harder when luggage is already stored, split across rooms, or too large for the available vehicle. Before checkout, separate the ferry documents, issued tickets, reservation number, payment method, phone charger, pet water, cleanup supplies, medication, towel, and any food from the main suitcase.
If lodging can hold luggage, ask whether it helps or hurts the confirmed port plan. Holding bags near Motomachi may be useful for a Motomachi departure and awkward for Okada. If you must move by bus, make the luggage small enough to board without blocking the pet carrier or slowing down payment.
Keep The Ferry Counter Deadline Alive
Tokai Kisen’s boarding-flow page says prepayment vouchers must be exchanged for boarding cards at the ticket counter on the departure day, and that a reservation may be forfeited if the boarding procedure is not completed 15 minutes before departure. Its FAQ advises arriving about one hour before departure for large passenger ships and about 30 minutes before departure for high-speed jet ferries.
If you are recovering from a cancellation, issued-ticket handling may also take time. Tokai Kisen says that after a cancelled return journey, using another ferry requires a new reservation through customer service or at the port counter, and travelers with issued ferry tickets should present them at the counter. Build the transfer so you can talk to the counter before the deadline, not just reach the building before departure.
Morning Port-Change Checklist
- Refresh Tokai Kisen’s Oshima status and record the update time, ship, port, departure time, and notes.
- If needed, call the same-day Oshima port information number or Tokai Kisen customer service before leaving lodging.
- Confirm the ship type and whether your pet carrier fits the applicable rule.
- Choose bus or taxi only after Motomachi Port or Okada Port is clear enough to act on.
- Check Oshima Bus for the current timetable, payment rules, and pet-in-cage rule if using bus.
- Phone a taxi with pet and luggage details if using taxi.
- Keep tickets, reservation number, payment method, charger, water, cleanup supplies, and medication outside the main suitcase.
- Reach the counter early enough to complete boarding procedures before the 15-minute forfeiture warning.
