Start With The Actual Departure Port

Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page is the official place to check Oshima ship type, departure port, arrival port, operation status, and notes. The page says users should refresh before checking, large passenger ship guidance is updated after 09:00 with final decisions planned around 17:00, and high-speed jet ferry decisions are around 06:00.

Do not leave lodging for the port you assumed last night. Oshima Tourism Association’s accommodation page says Okada Port and Motomachi Port are used according to same-day sea conditions, and that the departure port is not known until the day. Izu Oshima Navi also explains that wind and wave conditions affect which main port is used.

Work Backward From Boarding Time

Tokai Kisen’s English FAQ says travelers should arrive at the boarding area about one hour before large passenger ships and 30 minutes before high-speed jet ferries. With a pet, treat that as the port-arrival target, not the time you leave lodging.

Your return buffer should include lodging checkout, luggage collection, transfer to the confirmed port, ticket or baggage handling, pet-room or crew guidance, and the possibility that the bus or taxi plan takes longer than expected. If the ship type changes your required buffer, rebuild the day around the official status.

Keep The Carrier Rule Separate From Luggage

Tokai Kisen’s English FAQ says pets must be in a cage or carry-on with sides no longer than 45 cm, with the face and body parts not visible. The Japanese pet page says pets must be inside a cage or basket no more than 45cm per side and placed where crew instruct.

Large passenger ships have pet rooms, and Tokai Kisen says travelers should complete the onboard information-desk procedure after boarding. The carrier should remain closed while moving from lodging to bus, taxi, terminal, counter, and boarding area. Do not let extra bags force you to open the carrier or miss the boarding buffer.

Plan Baggage Before The Counter

Tokai Kisen’s carry-on baggage page says paid baggage needs a baggage ticket before boarding. Its checked-baggage page says checked baggage is handled only on large passenger ships, not on jet ferries, with procedures and payment at the checked-baggage reception.

When checked, the island-area checked-baggage cutoff shown for most island departures was 50 minutes before departure. That is close to the one-hour large-ship boarding target, so a pet traveler should not arrive at the last minute with a carrier, suitcase, and a separate baggage question. Decide what stays with you, what is checked, and what should be shipped or left behind before checkout.

Use Oshima Bus Only When Timing Fits

Oshima Bus’s FAQ says pets may be brought only when they are small breeds and inside a cage. It also says Suica, PASMO, and other IC cards are not accepted, while cash or PayPay can be used; change is limited to 50-500 yen coins and 1,000 yen notes.

Oshima Bus’s route-bus page displays current-period timetable links, route maps, riding guidance, fare information, fare application, and carry-on hand luggage information. On return day, confirm the timetable for the actual departure port, not the port you used on arrival. If the pet, bags, fare payment, or timing does not fit, switch to a phone-based backup early.

Make Taxi And Lodging Backup Specific

Oshima Tourism Association says taxis do not cruise, night service is very limited, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should inquire by phone. A taxi backup should be called with the confirmed departure port, passenger count, pet, carrier size, luggage amount, and desired pickup time.

Ask lodging before checkout about luggage holding, pickup timing, and what happens if the departure port changes. A general “we can help” is less useful than a specific plan for Motomachi Port, Okada Port, pet carrier, bags, and the required boarding time.
