Check The Port Before You Leave The Ship

Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page is the live official source for Oshima ship type, arrival port, departure port, operation status, and notes. The page says large passenger ship guidance is updated after 09:00, with final decisions planned around 17:00, and tells users to refresh the page before checking.

For early-morning arrivals, this matters because the ship you boarded the previous night may arrive at Okada Port or Motomachi Port depending on conditions. Izu Oshima Navi explains that the two main ports are used according to wind and wave conditions, which can change the useful bus timetable.

Keep The Pet Rule Active After Arrival

Tokai Kisen’s English FAQ says pets must be in a cage or carry-on with sides no longer than 45 cm, with the face and body parts not visible. The Japanese pet page also says pets must be in a cage or basket no more than 45cm per side and placed where crew instruct.

Large passenger ships have pet rooms, and Tokai Kisen says travelers should complete the onboard information-desk procedure after boarding. When you disembark early in the morning, keep the carrier closed while leaving the ship, collecting bags, and finding the bus or taxi point. The pet rule does not end just because the ship has arrived.

Use The Early Bus Only If The Details Fit

Oshima Bus’s route-bus page says connection buses are prepared for early-morning large-passenger-ship arrivals around AM6:00. When checked, it listed directions via Motomachi Port/Gojinka Onsen, Oshima Park/Onsen Hotel, and Habu Port/Oshima Town Athletic Field. The same page displayed timetable links for July 1, 2026 through September 30, 2026.

The FAQ adds the crucial caution: because ship arrival time can vary, departure times are not fixed, and travelers should move promptly to the bus stop after disembarking. With a pet, “promptly” still has to mean safely: carrier closed, bags controlled, destination understood, and payment ready.

Confirm Pet, Payment, And Luggage Before Boarding

Oshima Bus’s FAQ says pets may be brought only when they are small breeds and inside a cage. It also says Suica, PASMO, and other IC cards are not accepted, while cash or PayPay can be used. Change is limited to 50-500 yen coins and 1,000 yen notes.

Early morning is a poor time to discover that the pet, carrier, luggage, or payment method does not fit. If your carrier is bulky, your bags require both hands, or you are unsure which direction reaches your lodging or waiting base, pause and use a phone backup rather than rushing onto the wrong bus.

Keep Taxi And Lodging Backup Realistic

Oshima Tourism Association says taxis do not cruise, night service is very limited, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should inquire by phone. Izu Oshima Navi also lists taxi companies and says users should inquire by phone.

That makes taxi backup useful, but not guaranteed. Call with the actual port, passenger count, pet, carrier size, luggage amount, and destination. If your lodging expected the other port or a later check-in, call the lodging too. Oshima Tourism Association’s accommodation page notes that Okada Port and Motomachi Port are used according to same-day sea conditions, so lodging area and port may not match your first assumption.

Manage Baggage Like It Is Still Part Of The Transfer

Tokai Kisen’s carry-on baggage page says paid baggage needs a baggage ticket before boarding. Its checked-baggage page says checked baggage is handled only on large passenger ships, not on jet ferries, and that reception cutoffs differ by port and direction.

On early arrival, the practical question is simple: can you keep the pet carrier closed and still manage your bags from ship to bus stop, taxi point, lodging pickup, or waiting base? If not, your backup should be decided before travel, not while half-awake at the port.

An Early-Morning Pet Arrival Sequence

Before disembarking, confirm the actual arrival port and the ship’s operation note.
Keep the pet in a closed carrier that satisfies the 45cm Tokai Kisen rule.
Collect bags without blocking the pet carrier or losing a free hand.
Check whether the early Oshima Bus direction matches your lodging or waiting base.
Use the bus only if the small-caged-pet rule, luggage, and cash or PayPay payment fit.
If uncertain, call a taxi company or lodging with the actual port, pet, carrier, bags, and destination.
Recheck the return-port situation later in the day, because the island can use a different port for departure.
