Oshima Ferry Pet Luggage-And-Carrier Guide

Start With The Pet Carrier

The pet carrier is not just another bag. Tokai Kisen’s English FAQ says a pet must be in a cage or carry-on with sides no longer than 45 cm, with the face and other body parts not visible. The Japanese pet page similarly says the pet must be in a cage or basket no more than 45cm per side and placed where crew instruct.

That means the carrier must stay closed while you manage tickets, luggage, boarding, disembarkation, bus stops, taxi calls, and lodging check-in. If the carrier is heavy, awkward, or barely compliant before the trip starts, ordinary bags should be reduced rather than hoping the transfer will feel easier on the day.

Separate Ferry Baggage From Pet Rules

Tokai Kisen’s pet rule does not erase the separate baggage rules. On the carry-on baggage page, Tokai Kisen says paid baggage needs a baggage ticket before boarding and that high-speed jet ferries are compact, so large or heavy baggage beyond the standards cannot be brought aboard.

When checked, the carry-on page listed non-personal baggage as up to two items per person within posted size and weight bands, with stricter treatment for items over 200cm total dimensions or 30kg. The checked-baggage page says checked baggage is handled only on large passenger ships, not on jet ferries. If you are traveling with a pet, do not build a plan that depends on both hands being free when the official rules point the other way.

Know When Checked Baggage Helps

Checked baggage can help only when the ship and timing fit. Tokai Kisen’s checked-baggage page says large passenger ships handle checked baggage, while jet ferries do not. Procedures and payment happen at the checked-baggage reception, and reception cutoffs differ by port and direction.

For Oshima planning, this matters on both arrival and return. A traveler with a pet carrier, suitcase, cooler, and stroller has a very different risk profile from a traveler with a pet carrier and one small backpack. If checked baggage is needed, choose a large passenger ship plan deliberately and confirm the reception cutoff before assuming it solves the problem.

Match Luggage To The Actual Port

Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page is the official place to check operation status, ship type, arrival port, departure port, and warnings. The page says large-passenger-ship guidance is updated after 09:00 with final decisions planned around 17:00, while high-speed jet ferry decisions are around 06:00. It also tells users to refresh the page before checking.

Izu Oshima Navi explains that Motomachi Port and Okada Port are used according to wind and wave conditions, so the useful bus timetable changes with the port. The more luggage you carry, the more that port change matters. Pack as if the port, ramp, bus stop, and waiting place may differ from the route you pictured.

Use Oshima Bus Only If Pet, Bags, And Payment Fit

Oshima Bus’s FAQ says pets may be brought only when they are small breeds and inside a cage. The same FAQ says Suica, PASMO, and other IC cards are not accepted, while cash or PayPay can be used. It also says change is limited to 50-500 yen coins and 1,000 yen notes.

Oshima Bus’s route-bus page links to timetables, route maps, riding guidance, fare information, fare application, and carry-on hand luggage information. When checked, the displayed timetable period was July 1, 2026 to September 30, 2026. For a pet trip, the bus question is not only “does the bus go there?” It is “can I board with this closed carrier, these bags, this payment method, and this port timing?”

Keep Taxi Backup Realistic

Oshima Tourism Association says taxis do not cruise, night service is very limited, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should inquire by phone. Izu Oshima Navi also lists taxi companies and says users should inquire by phone.

That makes a taxi useful, but not automatic. Call with the port, passenger count, pet, carrier size, luggage amount, and lodging or destination. Ask whether the pet in that carrier can be accepted and whether the luggage fits. If the ferry port changes, call again instead of assuming the first answer still applies.

Ask Lodging About Luggage Before You Sail

Pet-friendly lodging still may have rules about check-in time, pet room type, where the carrier can be opened, luggage storage, late arrival, pickup, and cleaning. A ferry delay or port change can turn a simple bag into a problem if the lodging desk, shuttle, or dinner time is fixed.

Before departure, save the lodging phone number and ask what to do with luggage if you arrive before check-in, after check-in hours, or at the other port. If the answer is uncertain, reduce luggage or plan a taxi transfer rather than trying to solve every detail while holding the pet carrier.
