Oshima Ferry Pet Waiting-Between-Departures Guide
Short answer: When you need to wait between Izu Oshima ferry departures with a pet, do not treat the gap as empty time. Confirm the next Tokai Kisen departure, whether a new reservation is needed, the actual port, and the pet-carrier rule first. Then build a waiting base around carrier rest, water, food, medication, cleanup supplies, luggage, bus or taxi movement, cash, and weather.
Last checked: August 25, 2026. Ferry operation status, same-day port choice, boarding procedure, ticket handling, pet acceptance, carrier rules, pet-room procedure, bus timetables, taxi availability, lodging availability, weather, and sea conditions can change. Always follow current Tokai Kisen counter guidance and direct operator answers.

Start With The Next Boarding Attempt
Before choosing where to sit, ask what the next boarding attempt actually is. Tokai Kisen’s boarding-flow page says same-day boarding procedures should be completed early, and it warns that a reservation may be forfeited if the procedure is not completed 15 minutes before departure. It also says a prepayment voucher is exchanged for a ticket at the counter on the day of departure.
If your waiting gap was caused by a missed boarding step, a pet-carrier problem, congestion, or a service cancellation, those are not the same situation. Tokai Kisen says that when a ship service is cancelled, no cancellation fee is charged and using another departure time requires a new reservation. For any other situation, keep the ticket, voucher, reservation number, payment method, and staff guidance together until the counter tells you what can still be used.
Make The Pet Plan Before The Time Plan
Tokai Kisen’s pet page says pets must be inside a cage or basket no more than 45cm per side, with the whole body inside and no face or body visible. It also says open-top bags such as tote bags cannot be accepted, and pets may be refused during congestion. For jet ferries, only pets that fit within the 45cm cage or basket can board, and large pets cannot board.
That means the waiting plan begins with the animal, not with the clock. If the carrier is wrong, the pet is stressed, water is buried in a suitcase, or cleanup supplies are not accessible, a later departure may fail for the same reason. Keep the carrier as the stable place, reduce unnecessary opening and closing, and separate water, food, medication, towel, waste bags, ticket documents, and phone charger from the main luggage.
Do Not Assume The Terminal Is Your Whole Waiting Base
A ferry terminal can be useful while you confirm the next step, but it should not be your only plan for a long gap. Waiting with a pet is different from waiting alone: the carrier needs shade or shelter, the animal may need quiet, you may need water, and luggage becomes harder to move as the day gets hotter, darker, or busier.
If the next realistic departure is hours away or the next morning, call lodging, a place you already used, or a local waiting base before the pet is exhausted. Oshima Tourism Association lists accommodation by north, central, and south island areas. When calling, ask specific questions: whether a pet can wait in a closed carrier, whether luggage can be held, whether you can leave quickly for either port, and what happens if the same-day port changes.
Check Whether You Need Okada Port Or Motomachi Port
Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page shows Oshima ship type, port, operation status, and notes, and it asks users to refresh the page before viewing. It also warns that Oshima has two ports, Okada Port and Motomachi Port, and that the arrival and departure ports may differ.
Oshima Tourism Association gives the same practical warning in local terms: Okada Port in the north and Motomachi Port in the central area are used according to same-day sea conditions, and the departure port may not be known until the day. When you are carrying a pet carrier and luggage, a wrong-port assumption can be more damaging than the waiting time itself. Check the port before ordering a taxi, boarding a bus, or returning to lodging.
Choose Bus Or Taxi With Payment Ready
Izu Oshima Navi tells travelers to check Oshima Bus for the latest timetable, and Oshima Tourism Association says taxis do not cruise, night service is very limited, most taxis wait at ports or the airport, and travelers should inquire by phone. This matters when you are deciding whether to leave the port during a waiting gap.
Oshima Bus’s FAQ says pets may be brought only if they are small breeds and inside a cage. It also says Suica, PASMO, and other IC cards are not accepted; cash or PayPay is accepted, and change is limited to 50-500 yen coins and 1,000 yen notes. Keep small cash ready even if you expect to use PayPay, because a tired traveler with a pet carrier and large luggage should not be solving payment problems at the bus door.
Keep The Waiting Bag Small And Decisive
A good waiting bag is not your full suitcase. It is the small set of things that prevents one more failure: water, food, medication, cleanup supplies, towel, wet wipes, tickets, vouchers, reservation number, cash, payment card, phone charger, and lodging or taxi contacts. Keep it reachable while the carrier remains closed.
If you may use a large passenger ship, remember that Tokai Kisen says those ships have pet rooms and travelers complete the procedure at the onboard information desk after boarding. If you may use a jet ferry, remember the stricter small-pet carrier limit. A waiting bag lets you switch between those options without repacking the whole trip in a crowded place.
Use The Gap To Rehearse The Next Counter Sequence
Waiting between departures is a good time to make the next counter attempt boring. Decide who carries the pet, who carries the luggage, who has the ticket or voucher, who asks about the pet ticket, and who watches the operation-status page. If you are alone, put documents and payment in one pocket and the phone in another so you are not opening every bag at the counter.
Tokai Kisen’s pet page says reservation communication should include pet type, number, and size, and pet-ticket reception at the counter involves presenting the passenger ticket, stating the destination, and purchasing the pet ticket. Have that information ready before the next boarding window starts.
Waiting-Between-Departures Checklist
- Ask Tokai Kisen whether the next departure requires a new reservation or different ticket handling.
- Keep tickets, vouchers, reservation number, payment method, and staff guidance together.
- Confirm the pet carrier meets Tokai Kisen’s current rule before committing to the next departure.
- Refresh Tokai Kisen operation status and confirm whether Okada Port or Motomachi Port is being used.
- Do not plan an all-day terminal wait without confirming that the pet, luggage, food, water, and shelter situation is workable.
- Call lodging or a waiting base early if the gap is long or the next departure is the following day.
- Check Oshima Bus or taxi movement before leaving the port, especially if carrying a pet and luggage.
- Carry small cash, PayPay readiness, water, food, medication, cleanup supplies, towel, and a charger in one reachable bag.
