Hachijojima to Aogashima Ferry Backup Guide

Aogashima Maru ferry at the Port of Sanpo in Aogashima

Short answer

The Hachijojima-Aogashima ferry can be useful when you are planning around Tokyo Ai-Land Shuttle, but it is not an automatic replacement for a cancelled helicopter. Treat it as a separate weather-sensitive plan: check the official Izu Shoto Kaihatsu timetable, confirm same-day operation, know the port, carry cash if using Aogashima agency or Hachijojima Yaene Port, and leave enough schedule room for cancellation or early departure.

Last checked: August 21, 2026. Ferry schedules, fares, ports, payment methods, same-day operation decisions, helicopter timetables, route notices, weather, and cancellation handling can change. Always confirm current details on official operator and local-government pages before travel.

Do not treat the ferry as a simple backup

The official Izu Shoto Kaihatsu Hachijojima-Aogashima route page lists the distance as 81 km and the travel time as approximately 3 hours. That sounds straightforward until you read the route notes: the Aogashima Port route is prone to rough seas and strong currents, and ferries often do not operate on schedule.

That is why the ferry should be a planned branch, not a last-minute assumption. A helicopter cancellation does not automatically mean the ferry will be available, departing from the port you expected, or timed for your onward plan.

The official decision clock

Izu Shoto Kaihatsu says same-day ferry operation is decided by 7:00 each day. The same notes say ferry departure times may change because of weather and other factors, and that travelers should check the night before or the morning of departure. The official information call numbers are 04996-9-0033 for the Aogashima agency and 04996-2-1211 for the Hachijojima agency.

Use that 7:00 decision as the first clock in your day. If you also hold a Tokyo Ai-Land Shuttle plan, compare it with the helicopter clock: Toho Air says operation decisions are finalized after a weather check one hour before each departure. These are different systems with different decision times.

Port choice matters

Izu Shoto Kaihatsu’s island-information page says the Hachijojima boarding port uses the port with better conditions. It lists both Sokodo Port and Yaene fishing port for Hachijojima, with Hachijojima contact number 04996-2-1211. For Aogashima it lists the local contact as 04996-9-0111.

Do not head to a port from memory. Check the operator’s same-day information, then confirm your local movement plan. On Hachijojima, the difference between ports can matter when you are carrying luggage, catching a bus or taxi, or trying to connect from the airport.

Ticketing and payment

The Izu Shoto Kaihatsu route notes say reservations are not required when purchasing a boarding ticket. The island-information page says reservations are not necessary for the Hachijojima-Aogashima route and that passengers should purchase tickets at the boarding area. That is helpful, but it does not remove the need to check operation status before you go.

The route page also says that at the Aogashima agency and Hachijojima Yaene Port, payment is cash-only. Carry enough yen in cash for the fare and for local movement. Do not assume a card or mobile payment will solve the day at a remote-port counter.

Fare and timetable strategy

The official route page publishes monthly fare tables and timetables. Because fuel adjustments, schedules, no-service days, and port conditions can change, use the article as a planning framework and the operator page as the live answer. The official fare note says fares are one-way, include 10 percent consumption tax, and include the bunker price fluctuation adjustment fee.

A good ferry plan starts with three questions: is the route operating today, which port is used, and what is the latest official departure time? Only after that should you compare taxis, buses, airport timing, lodging, and meals.

Helicopter comparison

Tokyo Ai-Land Shuttle is faster on the Hachijojima-Aogashima air route, but it is also small, reservation-based, and weather-sensitive. The official timetable shows Hachijojima-Aogashima helicopter check-in windows from 50 to 30 minutes before departure, while the home page lists the operation inquiry number as 04996-2-5200.

The ferry is slower but may fit different weather, seat, baggage, or itinerary conditions. The key is to compare official ferry and helicopter status directly. Do not use yesterday’s success story, a social-media post, or a generic route search as the final answer.

Backup checklist

Question Official check Planning reason
Is the ferry operating today? Izu Shoto Kaihatsu route page or agency call The official decision is by 7:00, and weather can cancel service
Which Hachijojima port is used? Izu Shoto Kaihatsu island-information page and same-day notice The better-condition port is used, so movement planning can change
Do I need a reservation? Operator ticketing guidance The official page says no reservations, but you still need same-day status
Can I pay? Official fare and payment notes Aogashima agency and Hachijojima Yaene Port are cash-only
Can I return? Monthly timetable and no-service days Return trips can be affected by no-service days and cancellations
Is helicopter still better today? Tokyo Ai-Land Shuttle status and reservation page Air and sea decisions are separate

When to choose the ferry branch

Consider the ferry branch when the helicopter is full, your baggage or timing does not work for the helicopter, you have enough days to absorb cancellation risk, or you specifically want the sea route as part of the transport experience. Avoid it when you must return the same day, have a tight flight connection, or cannot handle a port change, early departure, or overnight delay.

For Aogashima, generous buffers are not luxury planning. They are the core of the itinerary.
