Short answer

The Hachijojima to Tokyo return ferry is a full travel day by sea. In the checked Tokai Kisen timetable, the Tokyo-bound large passenger ship uses ship code 2400, departs Hachijojima at 9:40, calls at Mikurashima and Miyakejima, and reaches Tokyo Takeshiba at 19:50. The key checks are same-day operation status, whether the ship uses Sokodo or Yaene, the island checked-baggage cutoff, and whether a flight would fit your schedule better.

Last checked: August 21, 2026. Timetables, fares, cabin categories, reservation rules, checked-baggage handling, operation decisions, departure ports, weather, flight schedules, airport counter hours, lodging checkout, and Tokyo arrival connections can change. Always confirm current details on official operator and local tourism pages before travel.

The return route

Tokai Kisen’s official timetable lists the Tokyo, Miyakejima, Mikurashima, and Hachijojima large-passenger-ship route. In the checked return direction, ship code 2400 departs Hachijojima at 9:40, reaches Mikurashima at 12:35, departs Mikurashima at 12:40, calls at Miyakejima, and arrives at Tokyo Takeshiba at 19:50.

Hachijojima Tourism Association describes the sea route as Tokai Kisen’s Tachibana-Maru operating one round trip per day between Tokyo Takeshiba Pier and Hachijojima’s Sokodo or Yaene port, with about 10 hours 20 minutes one way. Hachijo Town’s official access page gives the same basic sea-route idea and says the ship uses Sokodo or Yaene.

Start with the port, not the clock

For Hachijojima, the departure port matters as much as the departure time. Tokai Kisen’s timetable page warns that same-day island ports may change because of weather and says travelers should check the operation-status page or customer center. On the checked Tokai Kisen status page, the Hachijojima departure entry showed the 09:40 Tokyo-bound 2400 Tachibana-Maru from Sokodo Port as operating.

The same status page notes that Hachijojima has two possible ports, Sokodo and Yaene, and that the port can differ by day. It lists the same-day Hachijojima port guidance number as 04996-2-1211. Before you leave lodging, confirm the port. A plan that works only for Sokodo can become awkward if the ship uses Yaene, and the reverse is also true.

Same-day operation and sea risk

Tokai Kisen’s operation-status page tells users to refresh the browser for the latest information. It also warns that even when a ship is shown as operating, sea and harbor conditions may still prevent berthing. That warning matters on a return day because a cancelled or changed operation affects both your island morning and your Tokyo evening.

Use the timetable to build the day, then use the same-day status to decide the day. Check before checkout, before moving luggage, and before committing to a taxi, rental-car return, or sightseeing stop near one port.

Baggage and checkout

Tokai Kisen’s checked-baggage page says checked baggage is handled only on large passenger ships. It lists the island-area checked-baggage cutoff as 50 minutes before departure except Niijima, and it describes large travel bags up to 200 cm total dimensions and 30 kg total weight as checkable up to two items per person.

For the checked 9:40 departure example, a 50 minutes-before-departure baggage rule points you toward an 8:50 mindset. That is early for a hotel checkout day. Ask your lodging how they handle morning transfers, port changes, and baggage movement. Keep essentials, medication, valuables, charger, light rain layer, and anything needed before Tokyo in a smaller bag.

Ship or flight?

The ferry is the slower, richer transport-fan route. You get a morning port departure, open-sea travel, island calls, and an evening arrival in Tokyo. The flight is the time-saving route. Hachijojima Tourism Association and Hachijo Town both say ANA operates three round trips per day between Haneda and Hachijojima Airport, with about 55 minutes one way.

ANA’s Hachijojima Airport guide lists counter opening times of 7:45 AM to 5:30 PM and advises checking online check-in, baggage, and flight status. Do not treat the flight as an automatic backup: seats, fares, weather, baggage, airport transfer, and the exact flight time all need current checks. But if you have a fixed Tokyo appointment, a domestic connection, or a short Japan itinerary, comparing the flight is sensible.

Local movement before departure

UMISORA, Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s island access site, lists Yaene Port, Sokodo (Kaminato) Port, and Hachijojima Airport as key transport points, and its checked status table showed both air and sea departures from Hachijojima. The Tokyo Sightseeing Accessibility Guide also says the large passenger ship arrives at either Sokodo Port or Yaene Port, and that wheelchair users should request support at reservation.

Plan your last island morning around those three points: lodging, correct port, and possible airport comparison. If you rented a car, confirm the return location. If you are using taxi or bus, check current local timing. If your host is helping with pickup or drop-off, respect their instructions and avoid last-minute port confusion.

Tokyo evening arrival

A 19:50 Takeshiba arrival is useful, but it is still the end of a long sea day. Leave margin for disembarkation, luggage, terminal movement, dinner, and train or taxi transfer. Avoid stacking a late domestic flight, nonrefundable event, or complicated station transfer immediately after the ferry.

The best use of this route is to let it be the day. If you love ships, choose a seat or cabin that lets you enjoy the calls at Mikurashima and Miyakejima, then keep the Tokyo side simple.
